Emily Wierenga gets vulnerable and practical in a revealing book about the thought process of a young woman battling an eating disorder -- herself. Sharing her story, Emily speaks to the heart of those who care about others struggling with an eating disorder and shares a practical way forward from a biblical perspective. Comprised of insights and advice from both families and Christian professionals in the eating disorders field, Emily lays out a pathway that inspires and challenges readers to provide the kind of support a person struggling with an eating disorder needs.

"Horses, books, and dolls are often consuming passions for nine year old girls. For my friend Emily Wierenga, however, the eating disorder called anorexia nervosa began at age nine as a way to passionately challenge and rebel against parents she considered controlling and non-supportive of her feelings.

Sadly though, anorexia and other eating disorders invade like a "Trojan horse." Young people sometimes perceive food as a way to manifest control in their lives, but as Emily realized years later, the disease has a sinister life of its own.

Chasing Silhouettes differs from other books on eating disorders in that it reveals how Emily and her family found healing and "addresses the whole of the illness: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual" while giving the reader first-person insight into the thought process of someone suffering from anorexia and help for their family.

For the parent trying desperately to problem solve their child's food disorder, yet who is being blamed as the cause of it, Emily states, "It was never about the food, and all about the scapegoats. Eventually, we're left emptier for trying to pass the blame. And in the end, it's love we're starving for."

From the foreword by Gregory L. Jantz, Ph.D., "For someone living with an eating disorder, every conversation is heard through the filter of the disease--a disorder of the mind that skews and colors the truth of every situation and relationship."

Several chapters in this valuable resource contain insights from the perspective of the child, the parents, siblings, friends and "faith-based professionals." Although medical professionals also address issues in this book, the definitions and issues are broken down for family members to understand. Chasing Silhouettes is filled with support and guidelines for families and friends, while helping a loved one in all stages of the disease.

  • What a remarkably brave book. Thank you, Emily Wierenga for unzipping your heart like this, for sharing so openly about your struggle, and then offering real hope to the hurting. This book is a gift. But it came at a cost. Emily first lived through the pain, and then went back there again, reliving it for the sake of the reader.

This is an important book for people and families struggling with eating disorders. This book is written from the trenches, by an exquisite storyteller, blogger and artist Emily Wierenga.

    Her story is wrenching --

"I was that girl you are trying to save. The one who is all rib and screaming and slamming of door, the one who once laughed, who now wants to die. And this is killing you," Emily writes.

Yes, her words are haunting. But the story is mostly one of hope. It's redemptive and inspiring and hope-filled. "Chasing Silhouettes" is a comprehensive, practical resource for people who are trying to help a loved one battling an eating disorder.

I highly recommend this book for those who are struggling with disordered eating, and for the family members or friends of people who are battling it right now.

Thank you, Emily. Your words matter to God, and they matter to people.
  • I just finished Chasing Silhouettes and have to say I loved every word. As a mother of a daughter I want every resource available as to how to deal with this issue, hopefully this will never be an issue for us, but if it is, it's nice to know that there's a resource I can turn to, to navigate those rocky waters.

It's not just a book on Anorexia though, it's about having a healthy relationship with food and treating our bodies with love and respect the way we should.
It was interesting to read the different points of view from people in Emily's life and what they thought about her illness at the time and what they think now. The advice they give is invaluable.

If you know of someone that is struggling with this disease, I think this book would be a great resource for you.
  • I highly recommend Emily Wierenga's book, "Chasing Silhouettes How to help a loved one battling an eating disorder" to every mother raising children in today's image-centric world. As a mom of young sons, I was shocked to discover boys are susceptible to eating disorders. I also realized the weight of my words upon impressionable ears. Careless comments and comparisons about body shape or size can have painful repercussions, as seen in Emily's personal story.

Through the lens of her painful journey, near-death experience, and remarkable recovery, Emily offers practical advice and powerful prayers for those suffering with an eating disorder, all-the-while chasing away common misconceptions about the various forms of the illness with her extensive research. Incorporating various perspectives (her family members and friends) along with other people's experiences, Emily gives the reader a three dimensional understanding of her experience and the illness.

Throughout the book, Emily acknowledges healing comes from an internal and external source--one must desire wellness, but ones' motivation or healthy self-image is not entirely sufficient. Emily focuses on the whole person--the interconnectivity of body, soul, and mind, skillfully demonstrating how the three aspects work together in the recovery process. By writing a prayer at the end of each chapter, Emily recognizes God's role in the restoration equation. This spiritual focus sets Emily's book apart from other how-to or self-help books on this topic.

Interweaving stunning prose, raw honesty, and meticulous facts, Emily's book offers hope to those ravaged by eating disorders; wisdom to parents; and insight to counselors and youth workers. Her lyrical words and inspiring story will linger in your ears long after you close the covers, whispering truth and life.
